I've been on set.

Yup. You heard me. On set.

:D :D :D

Short, independent film made by a Tisch graduate that I went to high school with. There was a notice for extras needed in an article that was posted about the film being shot locally. So, I emailed her and the next day I was there. At 8:30 in the morning. It was spectacular.

I'm not going to go into details of the movie, aside from saying it was a dark faerie tale and I played a junkie/zombie. I was surprised that I got to do as much as I actually did, really. I had my teeth painted green, and really great makeup. Plus they didn't make me take my eyebrow piercing out, which is good, it worked, I was in relatively punk clothing. I had a closeup, I got to nom people to death, and I got to get a bucket of water thrown on me. VERY COLD WATER.

It was an absolutely EXHAUSTING DAY, the extras wrapped at 5 and the principal actors were still going when I left. A whole day to do one scene. It gave me a really strong appreciation for how much work goes into shooting a film or a TV show. (And a REALLY strong appreciation for anything that pulls off the huge takes that are just one shot... BSG Miniseries, I'm looking at you.) But it's also reaffirmed that this is exactly what I want to do with my life.

Now if you'll excuse me, everything aches. And it's awesome.

( For your pleasure... junkie/zombie me )

comments

Though the mirror and down the rabbit hole.... or whatever Through the Looking Glass/Alice in Wonderland reference they used.

Wow... that was a twist. I'm really, really intrigued by Virtuality and um... am really really hoping that it gets picked up as an actual series. Because it was a really great premise with some really great characters... and um... how much do I love Sue? (Teehee, she said five by five, you know... the way it's actually meant to be used but still... And guh... the slash goggles came back... I'm shipping Sue/Billie, not to mention the canon adorable that is Val and Manny.)

I love the setting... Great ship guys. I'm definitely fond of the Phaeton. I like the actual grounding in our real world and natural disasters because hey. I like that stuff. *sigh*

...

*sigh* There's a teeny tiny chance if the ratings and fan response is good enough that it will get a series. Because the thing about it is that it would be a good pilot. (Pilot. It's far from perfect, but then again so was the BSG mini.) I want to know what they'd do with a series. I'm actually really distressed by the thought that is all there is. Because if they don't do anything more... it's kind of... well... wasted potential.

This is sort of how I was feeling before I knew if Dollhouse was renewed or not. Feeling like "If that's it... well... that's distressing but it's a good jumping off point."

I'm actually quite upset by this.

I need to watch it again because I didn't focus on it as much as I should.

I found this little bit in a review...

If you kill a character in a game, is it really murder?

No.

But if you kill a story before it begins, it isn't entertainment.

That's pretty much how I feel about this "movie."

comments

Did I seriously just plan an outline for a Lee/Kara, Kara/Faith, Faith/Kat fic that spans from before "Black Market" through "Six of One"?

Why do I do this to myself? I could've just written something short and simple... like I used to when I wrote Buffyverse stuff. My Buffyverse stuff, usually was under 1k words. But no. I have to have an eight chapter fic because I need them meeting, and I need New Caprica, and as soon as I knew I wanted some Faith/Kat in there I had to bring it through "The Passage" and then I needed an end point which brought me to "Maelstrom" but even that didn't give me any kind of solid ending so it has to end at "Six of One."

Excuse me... I'm going to quietly finish my Chief/Kaylee piece.... which will take days at this rate.
I've been thinking on this for a little while, beyond the character relationship mapping which I talked about in my Battlestar Slayer post, where I mapped everyone from Buffy and BSG onto each other. I became really fond of all my choices for that looking back. I'm including a brief review of that in this post because I feel like I need to. But I decided to write down the character similarities between Buffy and Kara, as well as some Faith stuff because... well... now I'm wondering what it would be like if we locked Faith and Kara in a room together... o_o

( Two Tables beneath the cut... )

comments

I seriously just played The Sims 3 for about... 6 hours. X.x Good job, me.

I need to get back to writing but I'm just... stuck. I have ideas... but I'm still just stuck. And I'm sad. I'd like to be writing fic but I just... can't right now. It's awful.

So what do I do? I set up a bunch of OotB related sims. I loved messing around with the clothes, but unfortunately hair choices are pretty limited. Sadly, I couldn't put everyone in the same household, so I currently have everyone set up in 4 households in the same area (and the good thing about the open neighboorhood is that they can actually go visit each other), not including Kaylee and Chief who have a house of their own in another part of the town.

But my favorite thing to happen so far today? First night, a burglar (named Sammy... by the computer, not me) broke into the Adama house... and woke everyone up (except Laura who just... snoozed through the whole ordeal.) And Adama came downstairs in his robe and got in a fight with the burglar and had his ass handed to him. Then right after that, Kara (in just her undies) beat the robber to the pulp while Lee called the cops. The burglar got away before the cops showed up. I don't know why but this entertained me to no end.

( Screencaps underneath the cut... )

Aaaand I have my first day of training at work today... this coupled with my writing anxiety? Not making for a happy tulip...

comments

So after my giant BSG/TLW picspam of doom, I decided to do two things. A) Rewatch the pilot, B) see the interrogation tapes (mainly for Lucy Lawless)

A) The pilot reminded me of the things I DISLIKED... the show had some pretty shitty writing, and the actors did the best they could. I mean in a 40 minute span of time the characters had conversations about "bush confidence" and "nipple confidence"... pick a new subject guys. The writing is very stilted and unnatural a lot of the time. And I was reminded of how they trashed Alice's sexual orientation over the course of the series. Also... one of Bette's rants. I hated her rants. In the pilot it was about how no straight male therapist could ever help a lesbian. But I remember somewhere in season 5 they took Angelica to the hospital and the worker there asked which one was the mother and Bette went on a tirade about how they were both Angie's mother... and I'm sitting here thinking... the receptionist needs the biomom for medical reasons... *breathes* Anyways... I don't think this is a series I'll be rewatching.

By the way.. they're saying "C.A.C." for California Arts Center... that's totally not what I'm hearing.

B) The interrogation tapes weren't much better. HOWEVER

I want Duffy/Helena smut... NOW. I think it's the accents... two accents no waiting... (by the by, I have to call her Duffy, I can't call her Marybeth, it's so... not Lucy Lawless...)

( Thoughts on the Interrogation Tapes )

comments

So I've been told for many years to see Donnie Darko and I finally got around to it. Primary motivation? Learning that RDM had been watching it at the time he wrote the miniseries and wrote Roslin with Mary in mind for the part because of this movie.
Primary thoughts:
1) Trippy and amazing movie. Definitely want to see it again. Maybe on Halloween!
2) Mary McDonnell is never not hot.

On an unrelated note, I went to see Barefoot in the Park at the local community theatre and had a really good time. I had some issues with the casting of the play, and the fact that I don't think the director understands Neil Simon. But I still enjoyed it even if it was incredibly understated.

comments

Oh my god! I think Glee is getting lumped in with Slings & Arrows in that category of TV shows that just... aren't really TV shows and appeal to the theatre geek in me. (So now I have Musicals added to Shakespeare. My life feels complete somehow!)

The thing that struck me as kind of amazing? This show made me take two songs I despise and start liking them just because they were used interestingly. (Namely "Rehab" and "I Kissed A Girl")

I love the cast. Like for serious. Even Rachel who should bother me a million ways to Sunday has some really redeeming qualities and I can't make myself hate her.

Tina bothers me a little bit, in terms of stereotypes.. possibly-bi-goth-looking-asian-girl... reminds me too much of Anna from Chuck. But I still like her.

I love Will! I love how he's not afraid to do what he's passionate about. Plus his JD-style narration is fantastic.

But I do really like the entire main cast. But I think Finn may win for my favorite character so far. With Sue as a close second because good gods it's Jane Lynch! Though every time I look at her I see Joyce Wischnia from The L Word and then she had that one episode stint on Desperate Housewives where she had a slave. Crazy cheerleading coach, ftw though.

Random tangent to my adoration of Jane Lynch and her thing about wanting to "be an actor more than a "gay actor"" which is kind of how I feel about my own goals. My non-straight sexual orientation is in no way linked to my desire to act.

IN SHORT- Glee is definitely going on my fall viewing list!

comments

So... I watched BSG and for some reason, the slash goggles just were not there. Which is strange because I tend to see slash everywhere. But I wasn't very slashy with my BSG watching. I loved the canon chemistry, and I also think the gender dynamics were different than gender dynamics in other shows. I did occassionally have moments of shipping Adama/Tigh, and Roslin/Maya, even a little bit of Kat/Kara, but for they were mostly passing...

And now I'm rewatching Firefly... and the slash goggles are back with a vengeance! I mean I'd fallen into this pattern of remembering I ship Kaylee/Inara and then forgetting it... but this time through I realize I madly ship Jayne/Mal and Simon/Mal as well. X.x And I'm only one episode into the rewatch of this.

comments

Do you know how long it's been since a new Geek By Night's come out? A long time. A REALLY long time. As in prior to me ever having seen BSG. Which was January... I think Episode 10 came out on Christmas. I know this because I was listening to my geek music playlist while cleaning this morning and "I'm Not A Loser" came on. So I decided to go re-listen to Episode 10... and I caught this piece of dialogue

MINDY
Good for your. (beat) Uff. There’s a whole patio out here, why do people always have to bunch together and use my ribs to set the beat for a Caribbean tango?
SIMON
It’s a natural inclination for humans, when cold, to huddle closer. It preserves body heat.
MINDY
You weren’t supposed to answer that.
SIMON
Oh. (beat) Then why’d you ask?
MINDY
It was my nice, passive aggressive way of telling our over-friendly fellow diners to frak off. Trust me, you don’t want to see my not-so-nice means of getting my point across.
SIMON
You watch Battlestar Galactica?
MINDY
No need to sound so surprised. It’s cultural significance, as a study of human nature, is fascinating. Ron Moore is an utter genius.
SIMON
Agreed, I’m just, ahh, surprised that you’d admit to watching a show like that.
[...]
MINDY
Your C-3PO is a cylon.
SIMON
Much better analogy.

It still, however doesn't beat my favorite BSG reference from early on...

MAX
I mean exactly what I said. They wouldn’t FRAKKING sell!
(Beat)
BILLY
Sir, do you watch Battlestar Galactica?
MAX
Billy, now is not the time nor the place.
(Beat)
And yes. Of course I do. Why do you think I hired an assistant named Billy?
BILLY
Because you secretly want to be Laura Roslin?

I'd like to lodge a formal complaint that Gwen never gets to say "frak." Mindy, Max, and Gibson all get to say it. MINDY gets to say it and I don't. :( It's entirely too frustrating. I can't imagine that Gwen doesn't watch BSG, though it's possible she doesn't... I think next time I watch I'm gonna put myself in my Gwen mindset and see what happens. I'm actually worried, this is the girl who wondered if Giles watched Sesame Street...

Scott says it's probably going to be June before Episode 11 comes out and season 1 should be ending in July. One season down, four to go? *crosses fingers* Hopefully the other seasons will run more smoothly than this one has.

For those of you on my flist who have NO idea what I'm talking about... Go listen to Geek by Night and bask in the geeky goodness.

comments

So I spent some time today poking around Twisting the Hellmouth... because I should be having a life and I totally don't. I came across one fic that rewrote the miniseries with characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. The story itself was really not well written, but I thought it was really enjoyable to see their picks for matching up characters and coming up with callsigns for people in the Buffyverse. (I have been thinking alot about certain similarities between Kara and Buffy... which led to an Adama and Giles comparisson and then... well I'm glad I had this to help me figure out my feelings on the matchup.)

I have a little chart under the cut of the character pairings and my thoughts on them.

( Buffy *Phoenix* Summers- Death is her Gift )

Alright... Cylon time. I know there are a few people reading me who don't know all the cylons so under another cut we go!

( Mmm mm mm Toasty )

comments

I really loved the second half of this season of Bones. I especially loved the few little supernatural things that occurred, but I simultaneously called both the cause and wished that I was wrong about it. Even though it lead to that truly fantastic finale (favorite episode of Bones? Possibly!) But did they really have to go there?

( Thoughts on the Bones finale )

comments
